Mary Jane Doherty

| Filmmaker

Mary Jane taught filmmaking at Boston University for decades but now, as an associate professor emerita, she concentrates full time on filmmaking and writing. Each year, she solo treks to remote parts of places — Moravia, Nova Scotia, South Africa, Colombia, Catalonia, Connecticut — where she meets strangers, falls in love, and tells their stories.

She does not use GPS, finding her way instead with a compass and paper maps. This system works except when she doesn't know where she is in the first place. This happens quite often, but she's found, this is the best way to meet people. Learn more about her movies, photography, awards and writing on her website: maryjanedoherty.com.
